OVERUNDERSIDEWAYSDOWN Manly Art Gallery & Museum, 20 May – 26 June 2016 Curator: Glenn Barkley About the exhibition: OVERUNDERSIDEWAYSDOWN explores ceramics present currency within the art world and the reasons why it is of such interest to artists. The Australian Ceramics Association Biennial Exhibition at Manly Art Gallery & Museum excavates the foundations of this interest and brings together artists, some of whom have long careers with ceramics stretching back decades, and others whose engagement with it has irrevocably changed the way they work, what they make and how they make it. It collectively reenergises the ceramics community and brings it into new contemporary contexts. Participating artists are Stephen Baxter, Stephen Benwell, Angela Brennan, Lynda Draper, Trevor Fry, Emily Hunt, Rupert Jack, Rachael McCallum, Sharon Muir, Jenny Orchard, Madeleine Preston and Dawn Vachon. “All the things they said were wrong, oh what I want to be Hey, over, under, sideways, down Hey, backwards, forwards, square and ’round ” — Over Under Sideways Down by The Yardbirds |

A wondrous mixed-media exhibition;
"Man is the measure of all things", such is a reflection of our instinctual strategy to begin with self reference when contemplating our surroundings. When we consider what is a beautiful thing, a valuable thing, a good thing, or even a perfect thing - we first begin with our self, which embodies our past experiences, social consensus and our relative physical situation. This collection of works seek to disorient such reference points by playing with relationship of gravity, the longevity of a moment, the beauty in the mess, and the perfection in the accident. Interaction with these ideas can be subconscious, and whilst this in itself may not be "mind-blowing", the proposition that you are responsible for your perception is one that can be fascinating to probe. |
Crowdfunding opportunities for this upcoming exhibition are available for a limited time - so if you would like to find out more or maybe contribute, follow the link here; https://www.kickstarter.com/…/19201939…/hell-o-arts-festival

Rachael is fresh blood in the art scene - part of THAT generation that has always had the internet and developed chemical technology. In an act of primitivising, Rachael explores through the Ceramic media the simple reactions of chemistry and the 2d-3d threshold.
By what she calls ‘painting with ceramics’, Rachael takes advantage of the uniquely ‘plastic’ malleability of clay and its glaze to begin painterly compositions that finish themselves during the firing process. “The colour is a surprise, even to me, even if I repeat my formula. There are no guarantees in ceramics” Observing these pieces on the wall, further is revealed about the macro and micro patterns visible in everyday science; such as gravity, erosion, and fluidity. These details act as patterns in the palette of her works combining into a unique, unrepeated item . Her highly coloured works reflect the enthusiasm of a child, to propose there is still wonder in the world (aligning with the internet community’s rainbow fantasy muse ‘the unicorn’). Solid Colour (Part of ‘the Whole’) is an exhibition of the exploration thus far, a pun in itself referring to theories of colour, light and chemistry. |

Back TO the Table - September 2014 - Sturt Gallery, NSW
"One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop - whatever it is we are doing - and devote our attention to eating. "
Luciano Pavarotti and William Wright, Pavarotti, My Own Story
The mass production of tableware has lead to a disposable attitude to these everyday items, lessening the sentimental value of the item and reducing it to merely a function. A cup, for example, is one of the few intimate items of everyday use that touch two parts of our body at once - our hand and our mouth as we engage its function. Items that once were displayed in cabinets with pride, preserved like heirlooms, can be replaced at a 24hour convenience.
In this exhibition, a group of emerging artists have created a body of work to remind audiences of this delicate relationship. We hope to draw attention back to the table, and the community ritual it can encourage. Each artist adds their own dialogue to this issue, exploring the idea of the relationship of the unique and unrepeatable handmade.
Artists: Joey Burns, Zak Chalmers, Andrei Davidoff, Kate Jones, Janetta Kerr-Grant, Rachael McCallum, Ashley Fiona McHutchison; Sarah O’Sullivan, Serena Rosevear, Alexandra Standen, Dawn Vachon and Hayden Youlley.

Stephen Bird reports on Ink Earth, 2012
Collaborations are not easy at the best of times, so when I asked if any of the 3rd year BFA students at the National Art School were interested in a collaboration between ceramics and printmaking, which they would undertake in their own time and with no set supervision, I was surprised to get an enthusiastic response...
