Personal Statement

To design, is to solve a problem.

Understanding the nature of learning and engagement is at the core of of my approach.

I believe that learning opportunities are available everywhere - but the difference between information retention and forgotten information, is not just reinforcement of behaviour, but moreover aligning our motivations. encouraging participation and inspiring others to achieve more than good grades, but to be curious.

Face to Face learning

Ceramics

I teach ceramics in my spare time as I find the tactile nature of clay, and the interaciton of people and ideas inspiring thoughout many avenues of life.

The Learning Theories I apply when working in Ceramics rely on a hands-on constructivist approach to lesson structure, where students are expected to understand the basic theory and engage in experimentation. Variables in the making process exist beyond words in books or carefully notated glaze formula such as texture, thickness, weather, timing, kiln placement and dilution.

Adults

Currently tutoring adults a six week foundation Ceramics course at Pine Street Creative Centre, Chippendale

Children

Aferschool Kids & School Holiday Workshops.
Focus on handbuilding and clay reclaim as a way of understanding effort/reward exchange. 

Highschool students- 1 day workshop of basic handbuilding techniques. 
teens offer a rare challenge where even if the task is something they choose, they have a string social factor to balance when choosing their level of engagement.
I encourage individuality. 

Specialty: Glaze Chemistry

During my tenure at Kil.n.it I established an intensive Glaze chemistry 6week course that allowed students to bring goals to the class.

The course structure was;
wk1 - The Basic Triad & testing strategies  [Theory]- Make a test piece (homework Goals) 
wk2 - Adapting Old and New Recipes (Test processed)
wk3 - Acommodating Variables (Review experimentation results {Rarely are they same})
wk4 - Bring your own recipe (repeat initail test)
wk5 - Material sources and substitutions
wk6 - Review of tests, measuring success and planning for the future 

​Through group participation in tests, it is evident that the scope of variables to take into account in manufacturing ceramics is massive.
